Love: Sacred and Profane

Saturday July 31, 2010
2:00 PM
St. John's Anglican Church
Ticket price: $39

Ludus Modalis is the most exciting new vocal ensemble to hit the international stage. Based in France they use innovation and imagination to breathe new life into Rennaissance music. An experience like no other.

Established by Bruno Boterf, the twelve-voice ensemble, Ludus Modalis “The Mode Game” – has set itself the task of restoring the sound palette of sacred and secular polyphonic repertoire of the Renaissance and pre-Baroque. The group tries to distinguish itself from a too-generalised approach to interpretation, by concentrating on those aspects of performance practice sometimes neglected, such as pronunciation, an intonation governed by the use of the different modes, temperament, a search for variety in vocal sonority, and  a scrupulous respect for the original sources, reinforced by collaboration with musicologists. By adopting a practice of combining male, female and children's voices, Ludus Modalis strives to be an ensemble, in the first place, of colours, where the mixing of contrasting timbres is seen as a source of richness, and where beauty is not the predominant notion, but rather an “ornamental” aspect.

A native of Thorold, Ontario, Andrew holds degrees in music from Cambridge and Yale Universities, and was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Juilliard School, where he received the prize for the best doctoral document. John McDermott

Saturday July 31, 2010
8:00 PM
Gambrel Barn
Ticket price: $44.50

Join Scottish-Canadian tenor John McDermott and his band for a celebration of all things Celtic.

“Legend” is not a title John McDermott would readily embrace, but his accomplishments have become legendary in recording industry lore. The success of his first album Danny Boy in addition to a fast growing North American fan base, won through a tireless touring schedule, led to his participation in the PBS phenomenon, The Irish Tenors. Appearances on ‘Good Morning America’ and ‘The Today Show.’ catapulted him into a musical career that includes three Canadian platinum records, five Juno nominations and a solid international touring schedule. He calls Toronto and Boston home, but he has also found a home as an international recording star and household name – known as much for his successful musical career as for his commitment to veterans’ causes.
